As a former Critical Care & Flight Nurse, I am accustomed to clear & concise communication, precise planning, operational readiness, and situational awareness. I know firsthand the critical importance of having the right tools & systems in place for a successful Mission – the reason we would extensively plan, train, check & recheck our gear, and drill, drill, drill.
When stepped into my first role as an independent Surgery Center Administrator, I was surprised by the lack of any comprehensive ASC management system akin to the instruments and protocols I relied on in the air. After a few months, I came to grips with the fact I was flying blind: unsure of our trajectory, attitude, altitude, fuel levels, or operational readiness for the critical mission ahead.
Worse yet, I was an inexperienced ASC pilot and failed to understand that getting my initial State License & Accreditation was merely the starting point of the Mission & miles from actually completing it.
Even experienced ASC operators can become overwhelmed & distracted with the many details, rules, regulations & requirements when opening and managing and ASC. Left unaddressed & unmanaged, these “details” can quickly pile up creating massive risks for the ASC including loss of licensure, licensing fines, loss of accreditation & CMS participation, inefficient operations, and a compromised bottom line. In addition to putting the ASC at risk for the reasons above, Operations can many times effectively paralyze an Administrator, shifting his focus away from driving growth, recruiting physicians, existing physician satisfaction, reducing costs, and driving overall ASC profitability.
